Eco-Brief ..towards a greener and more responsible future 13 December 2010 Two Oceans Aquarium and Sappi launched a newly constructed seal platform into the yacht marine adjacent to the Aquarium this week. The platform is in aid of the Cape fur seals living in the V&A Waterfront and was funded through income generated from a live concert by renowned singer and environmentalist Peter Sarstedt and funding from Sappi. The platform will assist Aquarium staff in their efforts to disentangle seals which have nooses or straps cutting into their necks. If left unattended, the nooses get tighter and cut deeper into the flesh, causing serious and sometimes life-threatening wounds. While the seal team has developed several methods, including snorkelling beneath the piers where the affected seals are basking in the sun and snipping the nooses, sometimes a seal is so badly injured that it is preferable to restrain the animal in order to cut the noose. The platform will enable the team to ‘gate' an injured seal so that they can work more quickly and effectively on the animal. The platform will also help the Aquarium educate visitors about seals and the impacts of pollution Green Season's Greetings!
